The story of the African continent is told all over the world by different parties, and the truth is there are many different stories. But the story that we like to tell here at What it Means to be African is the story of people, of human beings who are just like you, trying to go about their normal lives. It is the story of a vibrant people, who are working towards bettering themselves and their lives.
For us, it was through the design of an entrepreneurship platform that would allow people from all over the continent to start and run a business. The concept was simple enough to be understood and adopted by all, but building it was complex enough that it required significant funding. Unfortunately, the funding was not available and the idea had to be shelved, but not before realizing that there were many young Africans out there, just like us, who are trying to build something in their communities.
It is because of this that we decided instead to start a venture capital firm whose sole purpose is to invest in these people, people who are trying to change the world from the African continent. This is the plan that is highlighted in the book, that instead of charity, Africans are willing and able to change their societies through investment.
